Somo recognized in Inc. magazine’s annual list of Best Workplaces in America for 2020.

Inc.’s fifth annual list of Best Workplaces for 2020 is out and we’re thrilled to share we’re among the honorees – the highest-scoring businesses with standout employee engagement, and #1 place to work in South Carolina and D.C.!

Organized by Inc. Media, the world’s most trusted business-media brand, the Best Workplaces list is the result of a wide-ranging and comprehensive measurement of private American companies that have created exceptional workplaces through an employee-first approach, remarkable culture, unparalleled employee engagement, and unrivaled benefits. 

The competition this year was fiercer than ever, with more than 3000 organizations competing for the award, and only 389 finalists singled out for the 2020 list. Each nominated company took part in an employee survey, conducted by Quantum Workplace, on topics including trust, management effectiveness, perks, and confidence in the future. The results pinpointed exceptional companies that are leading the way in employee recognition, performance management, and diversity. This year’s average employee engagement score sits at 73.5%. Somo scored 92.80%. How, you might ask?

We help the world’s biggest brands and coolest start-ups become leaders in digital change. We’ve designed and developed over 1,000 digital products and experiences, and won well over 90 awards for our work. But we wouldn’t be where we are without our people, and the value-driven culture we’ve built over the years. 

In the early days of Somo, the whole agency gathered for a series of workshops to establish our core values: Create Success, Lead with Knowledge, Love Innovation and Be Brave which still remain firmly at the heart of Somo today. As we continue to grow our global footprint, with a team of over 185 personalities spread across the globe in three different continents, the spirit of these values still shapes us. It characterizes our people and articulates things we hold most dear. And it shows in the feedback we gained from the Inc. survey: 'Somo trusts its people and that seems to drive the ability for us to move with agility, but also with consideration and care', one Somo-er said. Another one stated: ‘Somo has demonstrated genuine care about who I am as a person, both at work and in my personal life, and has done its very best to accommodate both. From day one, I have felt trusted in my role and been given the tools and responsibility to be successful’.

The global recognition that comes with inclusion in the Inc. Best Workplaces for 2020 is a tremendous honor. Recent months have tested businesses across the world as the coronavirus crisis proliferated well beyond anything we could have ever imagined. Somo's five offices turned into a number of individual workplaces (often in the form of a dining table). But while this new normal has brought a new set of challenges, we proved we have created a culture that allows us to thrive, in lockdown or not. Our culture is built on trust, and we trust Somo-ers to deliver, wherever they are. More than that though, if things get difficult, we lean in and support – as much as we can and for as long as it takes. 

Being recognized by Inc. as one of the very best workplaces in America is a testament to the enormous effort we place on building Somo’s culture. Under the leadership of our CTO Mike Astle, we’ve worked hard to make our US offices feel just like Somo's London HQ – while creating an awesome working environment where empowerment and trust are paramount; and collaboration, curiosity, and openness to change are encouraged daily. 

Building the right culture is no longer about simply encouraging the ‘work hard, play hard’ lifestyle with free food, drinks, ping pong tables, and open offices. It’s about prioritizing the human element of work. It’s about people that make up the company.
