For the third time running, Somo’s topping Campaign Best Places to Work rankings, taking a well-deserved #1 spot this year in the medium-sized businesses category!
The ranking identifies the best employers in digital, tech, media, marketing and advertising, recognising companies that are pushing employee wellbeing to the fore.
Being a number one this year is an incredible achievement – a testament to all the effort and hard work we put into building a workplace we can all be proud of, and continuing to strengthen our culture regardless of the challenges presented by the pandemic.
As COVID-19 turned office life upside down, many businesses have struggled to sustain their culture, profits and growth. But, thanks to our people, we found a way. We won a number of major digital transformation projects, scooped six new awards, and recruited over 80 new starters globally, 62 of which were onboarded remotely. And while Somo's five offices turned into over 200 individual workplaces, we proved we’ve created a value-driven culture that allows us to thrive, in lockdown or not.
The pandemic has rapidly shifted the working norm, transforming people’s attitudes and comfort levels – and feeding into how they want to work moving forward. It’s something we took to heart this past year, redefining our cultural initiatives and the benefits package to suit the new working reality and the dreary impact of COVID-19. It allowed us to challenge the norm, challenge our processes and keep lean to bring the best outcomes for our clients, our business, and our people. Being recognised as part of this prestigious award is a remarkable accomplishment, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the next 12 months take us.

Our culture is built on trust, and we trust Somo-ers to deliver, wherever they are. More than that though, if things get difficult, we lean in and support – as much as we can and for as long as it takes. So, while we cover the obvious stuff, like pensions, health insurance and sizeable bonuses, it’s our humane approach to work and our people (alongside free food, professional massages and bi-annual trips) that makes us a place to simply enjoy coming to.
With the global pandemic affecting not just how we work but how we live our lives, we had to ensure we can help our people in every way possible, from WFH set-up to health and wellbeing support. We’ve made sure Somo-ers have the tools and equipment they need, feel supported and can work in a way that suits them best, whether that’s changing their hours to juggle work with homeschooling or launching new initiatives to empower, motivate and connect with colleagues all over the world.
We might not have been able to all work in the same office, but our culture remained strong. Our Lightning Talks (where we learn from other Somo-ers about everything from wine and opera to living with bi-polar) moved online, our movie nights and ski/summer trips changed to virtual escape rooms, wine tasting and quizzes, and weekly company stand-ups turned into 200 little zoom squares – with bad jokes and good music to keep us sane.

Our team headed to Morzine, France for the annual ski trip in early January ‘20, just in time to enjoy the slopes, friends and Somo fun before the COVID-19 outbreak.
Each month, we invite a few Somo-ers to take the stage in our Innovation Lab (or recently - a good old Zoom) and tell us about something they're passionate about. Talks include anything from art, climbing and gardening to living with bipolar.
Our weekly global company stand-ups turned virtual this year. Extra perks involve seeing furry faces and (fake) beach backgrounds.
