Somo wins in 2020 Product & Service Innovation Awards.

We’re delighted to share we’ve won the 2020 Product & Service Innovation Awards for our work with Blackout Technologies! This groundbreaking project has scooped the prize in the Best Innovation in Security category, a fantastic achievement for a truly cutting-edge product.

Blackout tackles one of the world’s biggest challenges faced by schools and workplaces – the unauthorised use of mobile phones. It empowers employers and educators to selectively prohibit the use of apps, cameras and web browsers, and prevents access to unauthorised messaging and social media apps, all based on user location. 

It’s been an inspiring project – one that many said couldn’t be built, but Somo found a way. Since its launch, Blackout Technologies has gone from strength to strength, working with global companies and prestigious schools to pilot the product. Last year, the project was also recognised by the DADI awards, winning the Best Innovation in Technology category.


 Somo’s technical interrogation and innovation overcame seemingly impossible challenges and brought our product to life. We’re in the early stages, but the early results confirm that the need is there and the solution is Blackout.

Organised by Financial Services Forum, Product & Service Innovation Awards recognise innovation that delivers tangible benefits for customers and providers. The awards focused on the overall impact that innovation has had on the financial services sector and/or consumer, and whether the innovation achieved or exceeded its objectives and goals.
